Three Crows Studio - About Bob Noonan

Growing up in northern New Jersey, Robert Noonan spent much of his time in the woods at the end of his dead end street, turning over rocks and logs to see what dwelled beneath. Instead of collecting baseball cards, he filled his deep pockets with feathers, bones and stones. Today, that same interest in nature is pursued on the other side of the Delaware River in eastern Pennsylvania. Although it has gotten increasingly more difficult to bend down and get back up again, turning over rocks and logs is still a favorite pastime.

After graduating from Drew University, with a traditional liberal arts background, Bob went on to teach, among other things, environmental science and nature study to a variety of populations. Taking a job as the Director of Education at a small zoo, made it possible for him observe and draw a number of animals up close.

Primarily a self taught artist, Bob works in many mediums, sometimes focusing on the essential elements of color, pattern and design in a natural landscape, or at other times, depicting in detail, the items he finds and collects while sauntering through the woods. He works in several styles, ranging from realism to abstraction and often combines an assortment of materials and artistic styles in one piece. One can see the influences of northwest totemic art and prehistoric stone structures in much of his mixed media work. Recent spontaneous works explore the workings of the primal mind and the relationship between man and nature in aboriginal traditions, while more complex paintings delve into the cruel absurdity inherent in modern day politics and institutionalized religion.

"The materials and styles I employ are dependant upon the mood and idea I am trying to express. More often than not, the inspiration for a work comes directly from nature. However, it is not enough, for me, simply to paint a pretty picture of a tree, a field or a stone. The artist, I believe, needs to express an emotion or a relationship between that which is portrayed and the human psyche."

Bob resides in northern Bucks County with his wife, two children and an ever-growing collection of fauna and flora, both living and preserved. He sets aside time each day, in his studio and in the field, to pursue a childhood passion for the natural world, which has never dimmed.
